Chances are pretty good that you've heard Demi Lovato, Eminem, or Selena Gomez perform. These artists have a personality and presence that seems to reach past your speakers or through your radio and grab you. And while they have their differences, they do have one thing in common -- they've all worked with renowned vocal coach Roger Love.Roger Love has worked with countless famous singers and actors, and he has been recognized as one of the world's foremost vocal coaches in singing and speaking. And while an in-person lesson with him is probably out of reach for most people, Roger Love has decided to bring his vocal wisdom to singers of every level with Roger Love Singing Academy. Today, we'll be taking a closer look at his online singing program.
Things to Consider Before Signing Up for an Online Singing Course
Plenty of people seem to think that singing skill (or lack thereof) is innate. While this is partially true, singing is also an art that needs to be practiced if you want to reach your full potential as a performer. If you're looking to improve your vocal ability, an online singing course can be a great way to do so. That said, there are a few things you should ask yourself before you sign up:
Features and Benefits
Now we'll start getting into some of the specifics of this course. While many singing courses cover some of the same vocal fundamentals, we think many of the things Roger will teach you will serve you well in a singing career or in your casual musical endeavors.
Meet Roger Love
You may not have heard of famed vocal coach Roger Love, but you've almost certainly heard artists he's worked with. One the course website, states that no other vocal coach has achieved the same level of commercial success in the singing and speaking fields. Here are some of Roger's career highlights:
Here are some of the singers and rappers Roger has worked with:
And while this course doesn't focus on speaking, it's also worth noting that Roger teaches speakers and actors, too. Here are some of the people he's worked with:
Some of Roger's work has focused on teaching actors to sing, so it isn't surprising that some of his course focuses on overcoming stage fright. Roger has helped countless celebrities, and his unique singing lessons just might help you, too. If you want to check out what Roger does, this cool video (featuring many celebrities he's worked with) might give you an idea.
What Will You Learn?
If you visit the website for the Singing Academy, one of the first things you'll see is a mention of the "secret" middle voice. This isn't necessarily a secret -- the "middle voice" is really just a blend of the head voice and the chest voice. This mixed-voice can take some practice to achieve, and we agree with Roger that mastering it will significantly improve your singing. (If you're very new to singing and want to know the difference between head voice, chest voice, and mixed voice, check out this informative video.)
These vocal lessons also focus on training you to master diaphragmatic breathing, which is essential for just about every singer. If you choose to progress to higher course levels, you'll learn about mouth positioning and other breathing techniques. We like that Roger's training also includes guidance on applying your skills -- you'll get audition tips, tips on picking songs, and even tips on microphone placement. Even if you don't need to audition for anything, knowing about mic placement is great -- if you perform live or record in a studio, even something this simple can help you really transform your performances.
One cool feature that we think is worth mentioning is Love Notes. This feature is especially popular for students, and we think it's an invaluable resource whether you write your own songs or perform covers. With Love Notes, Roger includes guidance on how to sing each part of a song. He may suggest adding vibrato, taking a breath, using your chest voice, and so on. The goal of Love Notes is to help you apply the skills that you've learned. And eventually, you'll probably intuitively know when to use which techniques.
Roger's course for singers is divided into three sub-courses, and you can take one, two, or all three.
Levels and Pricing
If you're like many singers, you probably want to learn about a given course before you take it. Occasionally, you'll find one with a free trial or a 30-day money-back guarantee. Unfortunately, the Singing Academy does not offer a free trial. You do get a 30-day money-back guarantee -- if you don't think the course is right for you, you can request a full refund.
We like that the course is divided into three sections. Each section can be upgraded at any time, so you don't need to sign up for all three at once if you want to take the course for a test drive. You do have the option to purchase all three courses at once (by purchasing Course 3), but we like that this isn't required. Here are the three courses Roger teaches:
Course 1: Learn Roger's Technique
This course is designed to introduce you to head voice, chest voice, and middle voice. In this course, Roger will teach you to master each of these voices. You'll learn to get rid of pitch problems and begin singing with vibrato. If you play an instrument, you'll also learn some tips to help you play and sing at the same time. And as an added bonus, these lessons will also teach you to overcome stage fright. This is one of the first things you need to do in order to develop stage presence, which will take your singing to the next level. This first part of the program includes 35 videos. It costs $197, which is more expensive than most training programs we've found. However, given Roger's expertise, we think this is worth it if you can afford it. If you want to learn a little more about the course, check out this interesting interview with Roger.
The singing academy does have a sort of abbreviated free trial -- you can get four free sample lessons if you sign up for the e-mail list. While this isn't a very extensive trial, we think it's a great way for you to learn about the program and see whether Roger's teaching style is right for you.
Course 2: Apply Roger's Technique
This package includes Course 1 described above, and it's designed to help you go further and apply everything you learn in Course 1 to your singing practice. In this course, Roger teaches you to sing in six different musical styles, making this a great program for singers who have yet to choose a genre. You'll also learn advanced vibrato techniques, tips for mouth positioning, and intermediate breathing techniques.
Course 2 also will help you prepare for auditions. Building on the stage presence development of Course 1, these training videos will help you plan for auditions and choose the right songs for yourself. In total, this course has 70 videos, and it costs $297.
Course 3: Performance Magic & Feedback From Roger
This course includes Course 1 and Course 2, and it's designed to help you achieve your potential as a performer. You'll learn to develop your originality, connect with an audience, and cultivate an even greater stage presence.
Best of all, this level includes a review of your vocal sample by Roger himself. While this isn't quite the same as a full vocal lesson, we think this kind of online feedback can be a great way for you to learn what you're doing well and what you may need to improve. These training videos are $497 in total. This is admittedly a hefty price tag, but when you consider what it might cost to get private instruction from Roger, we think it's a good value. Plus, since this package includes all the courses in the Singing Academy, you get over 100 videos.
Social Proof of the Course
The Singing Academy certainly has some star power behind it, and this is a point in its favor for many would-be students. However, before you pay tuition, you'll probably want to have a sense of whether this is the right course for you or not. In order to help you make that decision, we scoured the internet for reviews. Here are some helpful ones we found.
This review snapshot comes from Music Grotto. It covers some of the benefits of the program, and this reviewer especially appreciated the Love Notes section of practice songs. This section is where Roger Love suggests you add vibrato, take a breath, etc.
This Singing Academy review snapshot comes from Bathroom Singing Crew. This reviewer liked just how personable Love is -- it takes someone special to come across as charismatic in a video lesson, but Love seems to do this with ease.
This last snapshot is from a personal review written at SherrylWilson.com. For this reviewer, lessons are effective and lead to impressive results. Like many students of this program, this person thought Roger was a relatable teacher.
We've been pretty impressed with the Roger Love Singing Academy. Roger Love's resume can't be beaten, and the fact that he's helped take famous singers to the next level is certainly a point in his favor. Plus, like most expert vocal coaches, he has the ability to break down complex yet essential vocal concepts and break them down in a way that even new singers can understand. We do realize that this course is somewhat expensive, but if you have the money, we think it's an excellent value.
